What is a Pancreatic Pseudocyst?
A pancreatic pseudocyst is a fluid-filled sac that forms in the abdomen, usually as a result of
pancreatitis. Unlike true cysts, pseudocysts are not lined by an epithelium but by fibrous tissue.
Causes
- Acute pancreatitis
- Chronic pancreatitis
- Pancreatic injury or trauma
- Obstruction of pancreatic duct
Symptoms
- Abdominal pain
- Nausea and vomiting
- Swelling or tenderness in the abdomen
- Feeling of fullness
- Jaundice (in some cases)
Diagnosis
Diagnosis typically involves:
- Imaging studies (CT scan, MRI, or ultrasound)
- Blood tests to check for pancreatitis
Treatment
Treatment options may include:
- Monitoring for smaller pseudocysts
- Endoscopic drainage
- Surgical intervention for larger or symptomatic pseudocysts
