What is a Pancreatic Pseudocyst?

A pancreatic pseudocyst is a fluid-filled sac that forms in the abdomen, usually as a result of pancreatitis. Unlike true cysts, pseudocysts are not lined by an epithelium but by fibrous tissue.

Causes

  • Acute pancreatitis
  • Chronic pancreatitis
  • Pancreatic injury or trauma
  • Obstruction of pancreatic duct

Symptoms

  • Abdominal pain
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Swelling or tenderness in the abdomen
  • Feeling of fullness
  • Jaundice (in some cases)

Diagnosis

Diagnosis typically involves:

  • Imaging studies (CT scan, MRI, or ultrasound)
  • Blood tests to check for pancreatitis

Treatment

Treatment options may include:

  • Monitoring for smaller pseudocysts
  • Endoscopic drainage
  • Surgical intervention for larger or symptomatic pseudocysts
